Alright, yesterday I had a little fun throwing together a Worsham Field template to see what the Big Ten and SEC logos would look like in Lane, which you can see here.
But that got me thinking... Why not just try and see what different designs would look like in Worsham right now. I mean I know there's a fat chance in hell that we'll ever fully paint the end zones, but a man can dream, right?
Anyway, this would basically be the current scheme with maroon end zones and some more detail on the sidelines:
Now, you can see, I put 'VIRGINIA TECH' in both end zones. Why did I do that? Well, because the way we have a comically small HOKIES in one end zone right now in some stupid effort to keep the font sizes the same in both is... well, stupid. It looks awful, in my opinion. Could it look better? You betcha!
But Alum, you might be wondering... what if I was in the Marching Virginians and I completely forgot where to stand during halftime when we are supposed to create the big VT on the field. Is there a way you could help me out there? Maybe have it so that the grounds crew mows the field in a certain pattern?

Anyway. Just thought this would be a fun experiment. Personally, I like both of the first 2. The giant VT sounds like an interesting idea, but it could be one hell of a nightmare to accomplish. Probably only suited if we ever go turf instead of grass. Or, and here me out here, replace the maroon one on English field with this sublimated version.
Oh, and you're not seeing things, I do have a stripe pattern at the 50 and 25 yard lines. I also have the 32 yard hash marks shaded in maroon in honor of those lost on April 16th.
Can you try reversing the white and maroon on the Virginia Tech at midfield?

It may be just me, but the HOKIES wordmark in the end zones looks too big on its own. Maybe shrink it down and put the VT or Hokie Head logo next to it?

It's been several years now, but I still don't know how to feel about our Star Trek style font. I don't hate it, but I don't exactly love it either. It's almost like it's trying too hard to be modern.
I know what you mean. I'm not particularly fond of it, and I think its stupid that the academic side spent money to design and unveil what looks like a cheap Walmart knockoff version of it to use on their own.
But, in the age of minimalism, I've seen much worse, and it did unify our athletic branding, which had been a bit all over the place beforehand, so I don't really mind it, either.

Unless you have a high res version of the version in your avi I think I can only do the current one that is effectively the same but including an added chunk that's a stylized outline of Virginia. Reason I say this is that I was able to come across the current trademark sheet for all our current logos, and unfortunately this one appears to have been retired.
To be honest, I am dissappointed and frustrated with what I have because I actually prefer the one from your avi over the current.

I was there before you an I cam attest as I got an A on a paper the compared and contrasted two characters in two separate books, neither which I read.
I had a couple group projects and essays where I ended up compiling all the work together, mainly because there were a couple people who were trying to turn in work that was legitimately at around a 6th grade level.

Please don't judge me on my fat fingers for mobile phone typing, or the things I say. I am smart person, really! I send things into space!
So there are two categories and owners of marks at VT: academic and athletic. And both parts guard them like gold and each requires permission from the other to use the others marks. It's crazy. It's why you can't find all of the marks out there. That is my current understanding.
So I was able to find and save a logo sheet for Tech that has all our trademarks in vector form, and interestingly it has all our logos, academic and athletic on one trademark filing.
That said, the specific logo I'm talking about was updated I think in 2016 to take the Hokiebird head that I used in this thread, mirror it to point in the opposite direction, and then add a neck or shoulder that is in the shape of Virginia....

So I originally thought of updating our old helmet logo from the 70s, just with the current wordmark. It didn't quite come out like I was hoping, it just seemed... off
So I flipped the TECH to white and... Yep, this works. This works really well

This is the reason it should be a primary logo for the Athletics Department. Embrace being The Tech.

Its also a good logo on its own. state of Virginia with TECH over it. Emphasizes that we are Tech while literally telling you we're Virginia Tech.
Putting this together, the new wordmark really works with it. We absolutely should bring this into the fold and I'm very much leaning toward we should use it as the midfield logo in Lane.

Completely agree that the new TECH wordmark works far better than I was expecting. I also agree with making it larger as you did further down in the discussion. Trumps the whole Our State pirate inside NC outline ECU did and the NC State copied a few years ago. My only concern becomes the endzones. With TECH in the center of the field, I don't like VIRGINIA TECH in the end zones, but when you go to HOKIES in the end zone the font is too large comparatively. It feels like the TECH in the center of the field should be the largest font on the entire field.

If I recall, we used to have endzones very similar to that with the elongated "square root" style. Then Weaver changed it, I think there were mentions of too much paint being slippery and bad for the turf?
It also costs money, which Weaver didn't like to spend. After the South end zone up grade, for a few years the field was white stripes and numbers. No end zone logos, no midfield logo. Nothing.

for some reason I thought LSU and ECU had logos that took up the width of the field. Upon researching, I discovered that was false.
I looked up ECU's for comparison to the hashes too. It stayed within the hashes, but did stretch from the 35 to the 35.

I support a boring looking field, boring uniforms (with no stripes on the helmets and jerseys like the early 2000's), and solid defense and special teams and an offense better than what we've had the last few years. If we can get that I will be happy. Boise State and Oregon can keep doing what they want with fields and uniforms. I just want the "Terror Dome" back along with some smash mouth football.
Good work on the field designs though guys, not knocking that at all! All of the concepts look really cool. I just can't get my hopes up that it would ever happen, or that the student section will be raised to the same height as the section on the opposite side to make our stadium hold 80k+.
My opinion is that painting the field is a cheap and easy way to refresh the brand, even if we aren't actually changing our brand. Let the play on the field speak to how much of a hard nose team we are, make the field beautiful for the fans.
Some of the most colorful fields in college football are by the best teams.
There's no reason we have to have such a plain Jane field other than being cheap for the sake of being cheap.

So, I'm going to say it's not just being cheap. It's about the health of the grass. It's Bermuda. And comparing it to 2 grass fields in the deep south and an artificial surface isn't really apples to apples. It stays strong longer down in the warmer climate, but starts to go dormant in the Blacksburg weather a lot earlier. Covering it up with paint is just suffocating it as it wants to fade out anyway.

Maybe we should explore putting turf down on Lane if its that hard to get grass to stay during the fall.
If Ohio State can make it work, there's no reason why we can't do it ourselves. Heck, even English Field has turf.

It's not hard per se. We have a turf program that is top notch. And they do overseed with ryegrass in the fall. It's just the climate. And with all of our helmet research, it would be a step back to put an artificial surface down.

we should look into doing one of those hybrid surfaces with the artificial fibers woven in at a depth of roughly 6" for the grass roots to wrap around for strength and stability in the surface. I believe Wembley and a few other UK fields do this, and maybe even Lambeau? I don't see why it wouldn't work even with our tray system.

Just a matter of $$$$. We don't have Wembley or Lambeau pockets. I don't have a huge issue with our grass. I mean we had a lunchpail as one of our symbols for a hardnose effort on the field forever. Having a perfectly manicured field just for the sake of paint is counterintuitive and counter to our grit, imho.

Counterpoint, we're no longer a small time college who is pulling ourselves up by the bootstraps to make it in this world. We are a major university with at the very least a nationally known brand in the 12th most populous state in the US. We are directly partnered with Amazon to provide a state of the art computer sciences program in the DC area. We won the ACC in basketball and are one of the few teams who have played for a national title in football the last 25 years.
Our identity is hard nosed football, but we really need to shed the 'bare bones, look like a high school in rural BFE' and embrace the fact we are a major university. Having a bare bones field makes us look small time. We're better than that.
And as far as I'm concerned, Fuente ruined the any semblance of us trying to identify with the word 'grit' going forward. That needs to be buried and stay buried.

Yes, we are a major university. And we have been. But we aren't one of THE football schools.
We are slowly shedding the high school look. The stripes are gone this year. We are now twice removed from our legendary coach. Again, I'm good with less paint, a grass field, and football being played on it.

That Nike contract is our own fault. We should be making more, but agreeing to a lowball offer just to get it out of the way was the last thing that Weaver did before he stepped away.
I know it was signed by Whit, but the timing of it really showed that it was negotiated by Weaver.

Health definitely plays a part. Its why we didn't paint anything but the hashes and sidelines in 2001 (I think) when we refreshed the turf to the palette system that was installed the summer of 2001. There was nothing at midfield, and the endzones were 100% green grass. They were concerned that the paint was going to damage the root system which hadn't reached its full maturity and it would just cause a lot of replacement to be done during the season. If I recall correctly they even had challenges the next season, later on in the fall, and ended up painting parts of the field green because the grass had gone dormant and was nearly brown in large portions of the field.
Heat can be blown into the drain trays to keep the grass active, could also paint at the beginning of the season and do less as the year progresses.
Northwestern, Colorado, Iowa State, Mich St, and Lane North all have natural grass and all have more paint in the end zones than we do. It's entirely possible and I would like to think a school with Ag roots (pun intended) can figure it out.

We rarely turn on the vac for the rain...doubt we would actually turn heat on.
And Lane North has a prescription turf down. Not Bermuda. We do have it figured out for the most part. Just because we don't put enough paint down for some doesn't mean the field is in bad shape. They know what they are doing and keep a good balance of it.

I agree.... But the Gobbler logo just looks like a Picasso take on the Gamecock logo. I kind of like the TECH state logo because its longer than its tall, so you could make it pretty big and still be between the hashes.

So just for sh!ts and giggles - can you make the gobbler so large that it encompasses both sidelines, and fade it a little so it's like a watermark on the entire stadium? Just like scale it up until it fits the height of the image.
Maybe instead of encompassing the sidelines it just stops at the sidelines.
....so kind of like the giant VT that takes up the whole field in the bottom image of the OP?
